Oh, Chico. Some might think we are just a small, dirty, boozy college town and some of you are right.
But there is so much more to it than you think.
Here are five fun things all of you college students should be taking advantage of in Chico.
1. Join an intramural sports team.
Yes, everyone, intramural sports are not just for Greek Life. Chico State offers a wide variety of intramural sports that anyone can join.
There’s flag football, softball, soccer and more, and some have coed options.
Joining an intramural team is an awesome way to meet new people, be a part of a team again and have some fun and friendly competition.
2. Go hiking somewhere.
Chico has a lot of cool places to hike. One of my favorites is The Flumes.
The Flumes is an amazing spot that has these elevated narrow troughs that used to carry timber. They’re built above gorgeous scenery and a river, so it feels pretty surreal.
If you’re looking for something a little more safe and shorter, go to Monkey Face. Monkey Face is a hiking location in Upper Bidwell and offers a beautiful view when you’re finished.
3. Visit the Oroville Wildlife Sanctuary.
The Kirshner Wildlife Sanctuary is an amazing rehabilitation center that is home to dozens of exotic animals.
Think of a zoolike environment, but you get to get even more up close and personal with the animals, and it’s a lot less expensive.
Even better, it’s a lot less cruel and sad than a zoo, because the animals are there because they have special needs that wouldn’t allow them to live a happy and healthy life in the wild. The Kirshner Sanctuary nurses the animals back to health and make sure they are comfortable and content.
For less than ten dollars per person, you can see and learn about snow leopards, lions, tigers, bears, tortoises, lemurs, pythons, and so much more.
4. Join a Fraternity or Sorority.
Joining Greek life gives you endless opportunities to get involved with your community, campus, and have a full social life.
Once in a Greek organization, you can get a position, join a committee or simply be an active member.
Fraternities and Sororities offer dozens of volunteer opportunities per semester that keep you super busy. And, of course, there are numerous themed socials and exchanges with other fraternities and sororities that keep your calendar full.
5. Go to events thrown by Chico State’s Associated Students.
Chico State’s Associated Students puts on events at least three times a month. These events can range anywhere from a sushi making a tutorial to a workshop about gaining professional skills.
These events are usually free or extremely affordable and offer a chance to meet new people. And even better, they’re either fun or beneficial professionally.
